Second Grade Educational Websites

Can you believe it? Another year is over and summer break is almost here again. During a long summer break, students often lose much of what they were taught during the year. I have listed some things that parents can do to encourage out of school learning over the summer.
It is so important that you encourage your child to read! Please take your child to the library to find books that they find interesting. It would be helpful if you could encourage your child to read for twenty minutes every night and then take five or ten minutes to have them tell you about what they read.
There will be a math packet provided on the St. Regis website that you may download and have your child work on over the summer. Most importantly, please make sure your children continue to study their basic facts at home! They need to have their basic addition and subtraction facts (0-20) memorized before they enter third grade. They should not have to count on their fingers. Please get a set of flashcards and drill for ten minutes every other day!
Encourage your child to write over the summer. Have them write their own book or keep a journal of their summer activities. Please encourage them to use proper capitalization and punctuation!
Please continue to have your child practice cursive writing over the summer. They will be taking home their handwriting books. There is a copy of the cursive alphabet in their book.
You may want to get an assortment of workbooks that give practice in all of the basic skill areas. Encourage your child to do a couple of pages a day. Workbooks can be found at almost any drug store or book store. They can also be found at places such as the Lakeshore Learning Store and The Teacher's Store.
Take a trip to a children's museum or science museum. Be a tourist for a day and visit historical places of interest in your area.
Let your child bake from scratch. Let them follow the directions and measure out all of the ingredients.
Grow a vegetable garden. Have your child keep an observation book to record what is happening in the garden.
Parents, the year is coming to a close and I want to take this opportunity to say thank you for all your help this year. I greatly appreciate all the help and support that you gave the students and me this year. If you had not volunteered to bring in goodies to our parties, chaperone field trips, organize special activities, and pitch in on our class projects we would not have had such a terrific year. Our year was much richer and fuller thanks to all of your kindness. I will certainly miss you next year. I hope you and your family have a wonderful summer!
